An Intimate Wedding at Athol Hall in Mosman
There is something pretty special about an intimate wedding in Sydney, particularly when you can celebrate surrounded by bushland while still looking straight across the harbour towards the city.
Dante and Loukas chose beautiful Athol Hall in Mosman for their wedding, with their ceremony and reception all taking place in the one incredible location.
It was a relaxed celebration filled with tears, laughter, beautiful afternoon light and plenty of fun once the party started.
A Beautiful Sydney Wedding Venue
Sitting within Sydney Harbour National Park, Athol Hall feels surprisingly removed from the city. You have huge lawns, established trees and bushland surrounding the venue, but then you look across the harbour and there is the Sydney skyline.
It is one of those Sydney wedding venues where the location does a lot of the work for you.
Dante and Loukas kept their styling beautifully simple, letting the landscape and the character of Athol Hall become part of the day. Soft florals, white ceremony chairs and the heritage style building worked perfectly with the natural setting.
And those Sydney skies certainly showed up for them.
An Outdoor Ceremony at Athol Hall
Their ceremony took place on the lawn in the late afternoon, surrounded by their closest family and friends.
This is exactly the kind of ceremony we love photographing. It felt intimate and relaxed, with genuine reactions happening everywhere we looked. There were tears in the crowd, plenty of laughter and all those little moments between guests that make documentary wedding photography so much fun.
Even a local cockatoo decided to make a perfectly timed appearance during the ceremony.
The softer afternoon light through the trees was beautiful, and as the ceremony came to an end, Dante and Loukas walked back down the aisle together with everyone cheering around them.
Candid Wedding Photography in Mosman
Rather than disappearing for a huge portrait session, we could keep Dante and Loukas close to their guests and use the grounds surrounding Athol Hall for their wedding portraits.
We kept things simple and natural, walking around the lawns and photographing the two of them together without turning the afternoon into a photoshoot.
The result was a mixture of relaxed portraits, movement, little details and candid moments with their friends and family.
There was also so much personality throughout the day. The flower basket, delicate lace veil, soft native florals, colourful guests and tiny details scattered around the venue all helped tell the story without anything feeling overly styled.
Sunset Over Sydney
One of the best parts of having an Athol Hall wedding is watching the light change over Sydney.
As the sun dropped behind the city, we were treated to an incredible orange sunset behind the skyline. Later that evening, the view completely transformed again, with the Sydney Opera House, Harbour Bridge and city lights glowing across the water.
For a wedding venue surrounded by so much greenery and bushland, it is pretty incredible having views like this only a short distance away.
Dinner, Cake and a Live Band
Once everyone moved inside, the atmosphere changed from intimate garden wedding to a proper celebration.
Athol Hall’s white timber interior, high ceilings and strings of warm lights created a beautiful backdrop for dinner and speeches, followed by cake and live music from Red Soda.
From drinks on the verandah to packed tables, hugs between friends and a dance floor full of colour, there was always something happening.
This is why we love photographing weddings in a documentary way. Some of our favourite photographs from the night are not necessarily the big scheduled moments. They are guests raising their glasses, friends laughing together, someone getting emotional during the ceremony, a pair of red sunglasses sitting on a table, or the chaos of the dance floor once everyone forgets about the camera.
Dante and Loukas’ Athol Hall wedding was exactly that. Intimate, relaxed, emotional and incredibly fun, all with one of the best views of Sydney waiting just outside.
